PODC 2000: Getting There
By Plane:
PODC 2000 is being held in Portland, Oregon. The Portland
International Airport (PDX) is served by most major US carriers, with
the exception of US Airways. It is especially well-served by Alaska
Airlines, Delta Airlines (it is Delta's far-east hub), Southwest Airlines,
and United Airlines. PODC 2000 has negotiated discounted
fares through Southwest Airlines.
From the Airport:
The conference hotel is the Portland
Marriott City Center at 520 SW Broadway in downtown Portland.
This is a new hotel and you should be very careful to go there and NOT
to the Portland Marriott Downtown, which is another hotel.
When driving or giving directions, be sure that go to the right hotel or
you will be very disappointed.
There are a number of different ways that you can get from the airport
to the conference hotel. Here a few in some vague order of preference:
-
Shuttle. Gray Line provides a shuttle service to all the downtown
hotels, including the Portland Marriott City Center on Broadway.
The fare is US$15 each way. You can buy your tickets on the shuttle.
The shuttles run from the airport every 45 minutes starting at 5:15am.
For the return schedule, please check with the hotel.
-
Taxi. Depending on traffic, a taxi ride from the airport to
the hotel should take 25-40 minutes. A typical fare is US$26, including
an airport surcharge of US$1.50 but not including a tip. There is
an additional charge of $1/passenger after the first. Click here
for a PDX-maintained page on taxis.
-
Helicopter. Metro Helicopters
has a service between the airport and downtown locations for US$39 per
passenger each way (minimum of two passengers). Flight time is about
6 minutes, and the service takes you from the airport terminal to the door
of the hotel (there is some ground time over the 6-minute flight time).
You must reserve in advance and luggage may be limited. Their phone
number +1-503-247-8294, or you can use email.
-
City bus. The #12 bus runs from the airport to downtown.
It stops on SW 5th Avenue (inbound) and SW 6th Avenue (outbound), which
are 2 blocks and 1 block from the hotel, respectively. Scheduled
travel time is 45-55 minutes. Fares are US$1.15 each way. Click
here
for more information about this route. Click here
for more information about public transportation in Portland. (Beginning
in 2001, there will be light rail service to the airport.)
-
Car rental. All the major car-rental agencies service PDX.
Renting a car is not recommended because (1) there are plentiful other
options as listed above, (2) parking at the hotel is US$17/day for guests
(day parking for non-guests is US$20), (3) public transportation is excellent
in Portland (click here for more information),
and (4) many of the major attractions in Portland are easily walkable from
the hotel. Click here
for a PDX-maintained page on car rentals. Here
is a hotel-provided link with driving directions from the airport.

Other Travel:
One can drive into Portland via Interstate 5 (from Seattle in the north
or California in the south) and Interstate 84 (from the east). Here
is a hotel-provided link whereby you can get driving directions.
There are also bus (Greyhound) and train (Amtrak) stations in downtown
Portland. Many city buses have stops adjacent to these stations and
provide continuous FREE service to within two blocks of the hotel.
